Burn Prevention and Awareness Presentations – Alberta Schools
Do you think your students would benefit from a burn prevention and awareness presentation delivered by a burn survivor? Then this is the program for you.
Lynda Rae Fraser captures the students’ attention from the minute they walk into the room. Lynda was severely burned in an apartment fire in 1983 when she went in to the fire to rescue her five year old son Adam. Lynda suffered burns to 80% of her body with 50% being third degree. The most extensive burns are on her face, hands, arms and back. Adam had less extensive burns as a result of a quick thinking neighbour who immediately put him in a tub of cool water. Lynda began her campaign to educate the general public, corporations and medical professionals in burn awareness and social acceptance of burn survivors in 1984. In 2002 she started delivering her school based presentations to students throughout Alberta.
Lynda recently brought her program to the Canadian Burn Foundation and is now offering it through them to students in Alberta and beyond. The program is free of charge to the schools, however all donations are gratefully accepted to help offset the cost of travel.
The program talks about the different ways people get burned (e.g. electrical, chemical, scalds and fire), how to prevent these injuries, and what can be done immediately to lessen the severity of the injury. Lynda then tells her own story of injury and recovery only going into as much detail as is appropriate for the age group of her audience. Lynda gears the program to the age group she is talking to. This program works well for CALM classes.

- C. Brand, St. Mary’s, Fort Vermilion
Some comments from students who have attended Lynda’s program:
“In this presentation Lynda enforced how important it is to be aware of fire and burns. This presentation will affect me greatly because I never knew how hard it is to recover from being burned.”
- Grade 5 student at Youngstown School
“I learned lots of things when you were her. Now I will be more careful at home, on the stove and give matches to my parents. Watch my sister and teach her what to do during a fire and not to do.”
- Grade 3 student at Kensington School, Edmonton
